Marge Karker Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Michigan Farm Bureau
Introduction
In the late 1960s, a scholarship was created in memory of Marge Karker — a 37-year Michigan Farm Bureau employee and former coordinator of the Michigan Farm Bureau Women’s Programs — to honor her contributions. Three awards of $1,000 each are made to students enrolled in agricultural programs at Michigan State University. Between 1944 and 1964, Karker organized Farm Bureau activities focused on citizenship, health, education, legislation, public relations, safety, and community improvement; her work helped establish the Promotion & Education and Young Farmer efforts in place today.
Eligibility
- Applicant must be from a Farm Bureau member family. If the applicant is married or aged 21 or older, they must hold their own Farm Bureau membership and be in good standing.
- Must be a student (two-year, four-year, or post-graduate) currently enrolled in an agricultural program at Michigan State University.
- Applicant must have completed at least one year of study at MSU.
Application requirements
- Minimum cumulative scholastic average: 2.6 on a 4.0 scale, as verified by the Michigan State University Registrar’s Office. An official MSU transcript must be submitted.
- Two letters of recommendation are required.
- This award is a gift, not a loan.
- For reliability, applicants are encouraged to draft longer responses in a separate document (for example, a Word file) before submitting to avoid loss from technical problems.
Award disbursement
- Each of the three recipients will receive $1,000. Awards will be posted directly to recipients’ student accounts through the MSU Office of Financial Aid in the semester following the presentation of the award (Spring 2024).
Deadline and submission
- Completed application, the two recommendation letters, and the official MSU transcript must be received by Michigan Farm Bureau on or before October 1, 2024.
Selection and notification
- A panel of the State Promotion and Education Committee will review all applications.
- Applicants selected to receive the scholarship will be notified after the review process is complete.
- Scholarship winners will be acknowledged at Michigan Farm Bureau’s Annual Meeting.
