AFCEA ROTC Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association
The AFCEA Educational Foundation provides ROTC scholarships, each valued between $2,500 and $3,000, to full-time sophomore or junior students in the Army, Navy (including Marine Corps option), or Air Force ROTC programs. These students must be pursuing a STEM major and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
Applicants should note that a single application form is used for all ROTC Scholarships. They will be evaluated for all AFCEA ROTC scholarship opportunities for which they meet the qualifications.
ROTC General Scholarship
Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Air Force ROTC full-time sophomore or junior students studying a STEM major with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 are eligible for ROTC scholarships of $2,500 each.
VADM Jon L. Boyes Memorial Scholarship
The Dr. Jon L. Boyes, VADM, USN (Ret.) $3,000 Memorial Scholarship was established to commemorate Vice Admiral Boyes' achievements and legacy. Vice Adm. Boyes served as the president of AFCEA International for a decade, during which he founded the AFCEA Educational Foundation.
An annual $3,000 scholarship will be awarded to a deserving Navy ROTC midshipman majoring in electrical engineering. Applicants must be at least in their second year of college, enrolled full-time as sophomores or juniors at the time of application. The scholarship is funded indefinitely through the generosity of AFCEA International.
Mort Marks and Joan Bowden Scholarships
The Montgomery AFCEA Chapter Educational Foundation established the AFCEA Joan Bowden $3,000 ROTC Scholarship in 1987. This scholarship honors Joan Bowden, the 1984-85 president and board member of the Montgomery AFCEA Chapter. The Joan Bowden ROTC Scholarship is awarded annually to an ROTC student attending a university in the AFCEA Mid-South Region of the United States, which includes Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the northwest panhandle of Florida. The student must be in the Air Force option.
The AFCEA Mort Marks $3,000 ROTC Scholarship was also established by the Montgomery AFCEA Chapter Educational Foundation. This scholarship commemorates Mort Marks, a member of the Montgomery AFCEA Chapter who made significant contributions to the chapter and its Educational Foundation. The Mort Marks ROTC Scholarship is awarded annually to an ROTC student attending a university in the AFCEA Mid-South Region of the United States, who is in the Navy or Marine Corps option.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
- Applicants must be full-time college or university students at the sophomore or junior level. Freshmen and seniors are not eligible to apply.
- Applicants must be enrolled in an ROTC Program.
- Applicants must major in a STEM-related area of study that supports the mission of AFCEA. Qualifying STEM majors include, but are not limited to, aerospace engineering, computer science, cybersecurity, electrical engineering, mathematics, and robotics engineering.
- Applicants must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
- All applicants must demonstrate good moral character, academic excellence, financial need, and the potential to serve as an officer in the U.S. Armed Forces.
- Scholarship awards are subject to the availability of funds. Scholarships are intended to cover tuition and course-related expenses, such as fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for the courses at the university for the academic year.
Application Procedure
Applicants must submit the following:
- Completed Application: The application includes several short-answer questions in addition to basic information.
- Current transcript: This can be an official copy issued by the school Registrar's Office or an unofficial copy verified by the applicant's ROTC unit.
- One Letter of Recommendation: This should be from a faculty member in the applicant's major field of study. The letter of recommendation should be submitted in pdf form via email to edfoundation@afcea.org. It is the applicant's responsibility to coordinate with their recommender and commanding officer to obtain the required letter(s) during the application process.
- Letter of Nomination: This should be from the ROTC unit professor of military science, professor of naval science, professor of aerospace studies, or designated commanding officer. It should be submitted in pdf form via email to edfoundation@afcea.org.
