INTRODUCTION / ELIGIBILITY (RESIDENCY) REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for Midland Area Community Foundation scholarships, you must reside in the county or counties served by each specific scholarship. Note: certain scholarships funded by companies or member organizations may waive this residency rule.
HOW RESIDENCY IS DETERMINED
You will be treated as a resident of Midland or Gladwin County for scholarship purposes if any of the following apply:
- You have been a legal resident of Midland or Gladwin County for at least one year.
- You are a current high school senior who will graduate from a Midland or Gladwin County high school.
- You are a college student who was a Midland or Gladwin County resident and left the county solely to attend college.
You are NOT eligible if any of the following describe you:
- You moved into Midland or Gladwin County specifically so you could attend college here.
- You relocated away from Midland/Gladwin County for reasons other than leaving to attend college.
- You have never lived in Midland or Gladwin County.
SCHOLARSHIP AWARD LIMITS
If an applicant is selected for multiple scholarships, the Foundation will award the two scholarships with the highest values. If the combined amount of those two awards is less than $2,000, additional scholarships for which the student was nominated will be granted, in order of descending value, until either all nominated scholarships are awarded or the total awarded reaches or exceeds $2,000.
NEED-BASED AWARDS — SAI REQUIREMENT
Applicants seeking need-based scholarships must provide their Student Aid Index (SAI) from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The SAI is the eligibility index generated from FAFSA data that schools use to determine federal student aid eligibility.
Accepted proof of SAI for these scholarships includes either:
- The confirmation page that appears immediately after you submit the FAFSA (save an electronic copy), or
- The confirmation e-mail you receive after submitting the FAFSA.
COMPLETING THE FAFSA
The FAFSA is the federal form used to determine financial aid for post-secondary education. All required information and instructions are available on the FAFSA website. Helpful tips:
- Completing your taxes about a week before filling out the FAFSA makes it easier to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.
- If you cannot use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, be prepared to provide:
- Social Security numbers for you and your parents
- W-2 forms for you and your parents
- Most recent federal income tax returns for you and your parents
- Current bank statements and documentation of stocks, bonds, and other investments
- Records of untaxed income (for example, Social Security benefits, TANF, welfare, veterans benefits)
- Business or farm records, if applicable
- Alien registration number if you are not a U.S. citizen
