Kids’ Chance of Michigan is an established 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to offering scholarships to the children of employees who have suffered severe injuries, passed away, or contracted a disabling illness due to a work-related accident. The scholarships are granted annually, with students having the opportunity to apply each year they qualify.
Qualifications for Students
- Must be 26 years old or younger at the time of application
- Must be the dependent of an employee who has died, suffered a severe injury, or contracted a disabling illness due to a work-related accident
- Must demonstrate financial need for post-secondary education
- Must be accepted or planning to enroll at a college, university, or technical school [as a GRADUATE and/or UNDERGRADUATE student]
- Must be seeking a degree as a [FULL-TIME or PART-TIME] student
- Additional eligibility criteria
Required Documentation
- Fully completed Kids’ Chance Scholarship Application including student, family, and educational institution contact details
- Most recent grade transcripts (an unofficial transcript is acceptable)
- A copy of the Student Aid Report (SAR) obtained after completing the FAFSA, including your Student Aid Index (SAI), previously known as the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), IF you plan to attend a 2-year or 4-year college or university
- A brief summary of the applicant’s educational and career ambitions
- Evidence of a compensable injury/illness claim such as a state workers’ compensation board determination letter or CLAIM NUMBER, or a death certificate
- Basic employment details of parents
Who qualifies for the Scholarship?
To be eligible for the Scholarship, the child's parent must have suffered a catastrophic injury or death in a work-related accident in Michigan that was covered by workers’ compensation. The parent’s injury or death must be compensable under Michigan Workers’ Compensation Law, and there must be no dispute regarding the compensability of the parent’s injury/death.
What are the Scholarship criteria?
The applicant must fulfill the criteria established by the Executive Committee of KIDS’ CHANCE OF MICHIGAN, LLC. These criteria primarily concern the student’s financial needs. The applicant must be a resident of Michigan, aged between 17-22, and must demonstrate a financial need arising from the parent’s injury/death.
How long is the Scholarship valid for?
The Scholarship is valid for one academic year or term and may be based on academic performance. The recipient may reapply at the end of each academic year or term for the subsequent academic year or term. Renewals depend on fund availability.
What expenses does the Scholarship cover?
Scholarships, ranging from $3750.00 to $7500.00, are awarded based on fund availability and the number of eligible applicants. These scholarships can be used at any accredited college, community college, trade, or vocational school within Michigan. Scholarships are paid directly to the educational institution and may cover tuition and book costs not covered by other grants and/or scholarships.
What documents should accompany the completed application?
Your application will not be considered by the Scholarship Committee until all documents mentioned in the scholarship application form are received.
