Heydenburg Family Scholarship Fund
Scholarship Sponsored by Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation
Floyd and Margaret (“Peg”) Heydenburg, both music and education graduates of Illinois Wesleyan University, filled their home with music from the start of their marriage. Floyd’s teaching career led the family to Bad Axe, Belding, and Traverse City, where he taught choir, band, and orchestra and served as president of the Michigan School Vocal Association. Peg raised their four children — Paul, Bob, Al, and Linda — and in 1951 the family relocated to Mt. Pleasant. There Floyd taught choir at Mt. Pleasant High School and later joined Central Michigan University as a professor of music. Peg gave private piano lessons in their home and, in 1962, began a career as an elementary teacher. Over the years she taught kindergarten through third grade at Pullen, McGuire, and Vowles Elementary Schools and also volunteered as a wedding reception coordinator. The couple were active members of First Presbyterian Church in Mt. Pleasant; Floyd directed the Chancel and Cadet choirs, and Peg, their children, and some spouses fondly remember singing under his direction. Their children recall being given practical skills and experiences that helped shape their lives — including summer building projects that became a family trade continued by later generations. Floyd and Peg’s legacy in the family and the community is one of service, love, and joy.
