Overview
The UAA Janice K. Barden Aviation Scholarship, administered by NBAA Charities, provides annual awards to undergraduate students pursuing aviation-focused studies at institutions that hold membership in both NBAA and the University Aviation Association (UAA). Each year up to five undergraduates receive a minimum grant of $1,000 to help cover educational expenses. Awards are for a single academic year; checks are issued payable to the recipient’s school. Scholarship decisions are announced in the fall.
Eligibility
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Must be a full-time undergraduate student in an aviation-related program at an NBAA/UAA member school (rising sophomore standing or above). Contact your department head or academic advisor to obtain your institution’s UAA membership number; the application is incomplete without this number.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Proof of enrollment or of accepted enrollment will be required before any award funds are distributed.
Award amount and use
- Minimum award: $1,000.
- Up to five recipients may be selected each year.
- Scholarships cover one academic year; checks are made payable to the recipient’s school.
- Recipients must use the scholarship funds by December 31, 2026, or risk forfeiture. (Awards are intended for use during the academic year.)

Awards will be made without regard to sex, race, religion or national origin.
Application requirements (complete package)
All of the following must be submitted together and received by NBAA Charities by August 11, 2025:
1. Completed and signed application form (include your institution’s UAA membership number).
2. A 250-word, typed, double-spaced essay on separate paper describing your interest in and career goals within business aviation. Include your typed name at the top of the essay page.
3. An official transcript issued by your school or a copy of your transcript.
4. A current, one-page resume listing your permanent home address.
5. One letter of recommendation from a faculty member in your institution’s aviation department.
Submission deadline and timing
All application materials must be received by NBAA Charities no later than August 11, 2025 to be considered. Recipients will be notified in the fall.
About the scholarship name
This scholarship honors the late Janice K. Barden, a long-time leader in the aviation community who served as chair of the NBAA Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition Local Committee eight times — more than anyone else in NBAA’s history.
